2 Kings 22 A Life of Devotion
Josiah was the godliest king of Judah since David had been on the throne, reigning for thirty-one years. He didn’t “turn aside to the right hand or to the left.” A singular event characterizes Josiah’s life that was providential. He had sent a trusted emissary, Shaphan, to deliver money from Hilkiah the high priest to those who were responsible for restoration of the temple and the supplies. They didn’t need to have an accounting, as these laborers dealt “faithfully” in the area of finances as men of integrity.
During Shaphan’s visit, Hilkiah shared he had found “the Book of the Law” in the House of the Lord. Shaphan brought it back to Josiah requested Hilkiah, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan and Asaiah to ask the Lord what this Book meant for Judah; as he understood that the Lord’s anger was aroused against them due to the disobedience of their fathers.
It’s interesting that they went to Huldah the prophetess rather than Jeremiah the prophet. God isn’t as concerned about gender as so many are. He will use open vessels for His purposes regardless of their gender, male or female.
The message from the Lord through this woman of God was one of future judgment on Judah; but Josiah would “die in peace”. We know that Josiah was mortally wounded in a battle between Egypt and Assyria that he should have had no business in whatsoever; but he did die in peace back in Jerusalem (2 Chron. 35) and had served the Lord all the days of his life.
It is possible to live for the Lord for the duration of your life. Many of us have regrets for not having that testimony; yet there are many who do. I know one lady, my wife Kathy, who has served and loved the Lord her entire life. Her devotion and total surrender to Lord has been a testimony to our children and other family members.
The key is a life of devotion!
