The Lord’s Pity ?
Psalm 103: 13, 14 As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust
The first impression when hearing the word “pity” is almost depressing or condescending perception of someone; however that isn’t anywhere near what the Lord is unveiling here with David. The word could be translated as “caressing care” for His children.
Recipients of His caressing care have the benefit of intimacy that few comprehend or understand, yet most yearn for. Our reverential awe of Him is what prompts Him to pity or demonstrate caressing care for us.
In the condition of pity, He protects us from strategies and destruction that would waste us away, because He knows our “frame” or limits. The reference to “dust” reminds us He was there when our first ancestors were created in Eden. He knows our origin and our limits. That’s real security!
If I’m to be pitied, all take His pity every day, all day!
