Remedy for Despair
Psalm 89: 1, 2 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations. For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever; Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.”
Reading the two previous Psalms, Ethan is in the pit of despair. He cries out for vindication and deliverance from the instruments of judgment during the assault and subsequent captivity in Babylon of Israel.
The closing of this Psalm indicates the misery continued, yet there is a dramatic shift in Ethan; he begins to recount the blessings, grandeur and mercies of the Lord. He opts to declare “with my mouth” the Lord’s mercies and faithfulness across generational lines. For some of the younger, it may have been the first time they’d ever heard the accounts shared of the goodness of God.
Our declarations of God’s mercy and faithfulness not only lift us out of the pit of despair, but it becomes a source of encouragement for younger generations as we recount His past blessings.
Declare His mercies! Declare His faithfulness! To ALL generations!
